What Coaching Is (And Isn’T)
Real change happens when you shift the way you see yourself, your challenges, and the world around you. That’s what coaching helps you do.
At its heart, coaching is about helping you remove the barriers that are getting in your way. Sometimes we need new tools, new skills, or new ideas to move forward. But just as often, we already know enough - we’re just stuck. Coaching is the work of getting unstuck. It focuses on mindset: the attitudes, beliefs, and ways of seeing things that either open doors or quietly hold them shut.
What Coaching Is
A way to get unstuck.
Coaching helps you recognise and remove hidden barriers — fear, habits, or blind spots — so you can start moving forward.
A focus on mindset over mechanics.
It’s about changing the way you think about your challenges, not just handing you a to-do list or a set of instructions.
A partnership built on questions, not advice.
Many people assume a coach will give them advice. In fact, coaching is mainly question-based. Your coach will guide you to find your own answers through reflection, not by telling you what to do.
A space for clarity and action.
Good coaching creates a safe and neutral space for honest thought and real movement, helping you act with confidence rather than waiting for the “perfect” answer or moment.
A commitment to your future self.
Coaching closes the gap between the man you are and the man you want to become — through awareness, responsibility, and action.
What Coaching IsN’t
Preaching or ‘quick fixes’.
A coach won’t tell you exactly what to do. They’ll help you find your own best next steps.
handing out advice.
Coaching is built around asking the right questions, not dispensing ready-made solutions.
teaching or training.
You won’t be given a manual to follow. Coaching focuses on unlocking what you already have inside you.
motivational speeches.
It’s not about hype or pushing you harder — it’s about thoughtful shifts that create real, lasting change. Your coach may ‘get in your face’ if that’s what will be most useful, but it will always be done with love and in service to goals you set.
It isn’t therapy or mental health treatment.
This one is important. Coaching can be powerful. It can even feel like a huge weight’s been lifted.
But it is not therapy, counselling, or mental health treatment. Unless specifically mentioned, coaches aren’t trained or licensed to deal with trauma, addiction, or mental health conditions.
If that kind of support is needed, it’s important to work with someone who’s properly qualified. Coaching is here to help you tackle everyday challenges, build momentum, and move forward — not to replace the deeper care you might need and deserve elsewhere.
